About This Service
Ancient Technique. Modern Relief.
Cupping therapy has been practiced for thousands of years across Chinese, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern traditions โ and for good reason. Where conventional massage pushes and compresses tissue, cupping does the opposite: it creates negative pressure (suction) that lifts the layers of skin, fascia, and muscle away from each other, separating adhered layers and encouraging fresh blood flow into areas of restriction.
This decompressive approach is uniquely effective for releasing stubborn myofascial restrictions, reducing inflammation, improving circulation in congested areas, and addressing the kind of deep, layered tension that compression-based massage cannot fully reach.
At Water Lily, cupping is offered as a standalone treatment or integrated into a massage session, depending on your needs. Our licensed massage therapists serve Battle Ground and the greater Clark County area โ and will assess your condition and recommend the most effective approach.

Benefits
Why Choose Cupping Therapy
Releases Deep Myofascial Restrictions
The lifting action of cups separates adhered layers of fascia and muscle that compression cannot reach โ effectively treating restrictions at the root rather than simply working the surface.
Dramatically Improves Local Circulation
Suction draws fresh, oxygenated blood into congested areas that have been chronically under-supplied โ accelerating healing, reducing pain, and improving tissue health in targeted zones.
Reduces Inflammation
Though counterintuitive, the localized bruise-like marks cupping produces represent a therapeutic inflammatory response โ drawing stagnant blood and metabolic waste to the surface to be cleared by the lymphatic system.
Pain Relief
Cupping is particularly effective for musculoskeletal pain โ including back pain, neck pain, shoulder tension, and sports injuries โ often providing rapid relief that outlasts the session itself.
Deep Relaxation
Many clients find cupping profoundly relaxing despite its unfamiliar sensation. The nervous system response to decompressive work can be as calming as traditional massage.
Supports Athletic Performance
Athletes increasingly use cupping for pre-event warm-up, post-event recovery, and ongoing tissue maintenance โ reducing soreness, improving flexibility, and speeding return to peak performance.
Your Experience
What to Expect
Assessment & Discussion
Your therapist discusses your areas of concern, reviews any relevant health history, and explains the cupping process. It's normal to feel curious or uncertain your first time โ ask as many questions as you like.
Cup Placement
Cups are placed on the skin over the target areas โ typically the back, shoulders, hips, or legs. The suction is created and adjusted to a level that feels like significant pulling pressure without sharp discomfort. Cups may remain stationary or be slid across the skin.
Treatment Time
Cups are typically left in place for 5โ15 minutes per area. During this time you rest comfortably while the cups do their work โ lifting tissue, drawing circulation, and separating restricted layers.
Aftercare & Marks
After cups are removed, your therapist may apply soothing oil or finish with massage strokes. Circular marks on the skin (ranging from pink to deep red) are a normal, expected outcome and are not bruises in the traditional sense โ they fade within 3โ7 days.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked
Do the marks mean I was bruised?
The marks cupping leaves are not conventional bruises caused by trauma. They are the result of old, stagnant blood being drawn to the surface โ a therapeutic response. They are typically painless to the touch and fade within 3โ7 days depending on the degree of stagnation in the tissue.
Is cupping painful?
Cupping should not be painful. The sensation is one of significant pulling and pressure โ intense but not sharp. Your therapist adjusts the suction level to your tolerance. Some tenderness in the treated area for 1โ2 days afterward is normal.
What conditions does cupping help most?
Cupping is particularly effective for chronic back and neck pain, shoulder restriction, tight IT bands, sports injuries, scar tissue, respiratory congestion, and areas of chronic myofascial restriction. It's a versatile tool with many applications.
Are there people who should not receive cupping?
Cupping is contraindicated over inflamed or broken skin, varicose veins, bony prominences, active sunburn, and areas of recent trauma. It is not recommended for clients taking blood thinners, those with bleeding disorders, or during pregnancy without specific medical clearance.
Can I combine cupping with massage?
Yes โ cupping and massage complement each other well. Cupping before massage loosens deep tissue; massage after cupping helps integrate the work and soothe the treated area. Let your therapist know your goals and they'll recommend the best combination.
